In addition to being essential to general health and well-being, exercise is helpful in managing many MS symptoms. Indeed, according to a review published in August 2016 in Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics, exercise has been associated with a reduced relapse rate, lower lesion volume, slower progression of the disease, and improved performance on neurological tests. Other benefits include:

  • better cardiovascular fitness
  • improved strength
  • better bladder and bowel function
  • less fatigue and depression
  • a more positive attitude
  • increased participation in social activities

Additional studies have confirmed the benefits of exercise, including improvement in cognitive function and mood enhancement. In contrast inactivity in people with or without MS can result in numerous health problems including many risk factors associated with coronary heart disease, muscle weakness, decreased bone density, and shallow, inefficient breathing.

TJ Fortuna, recently diagnosed with MS and a Physical Exercise Trainer with over 10 years experience, is continuing his small group personalized class MS & Exercise.

If you're new to MS, and you're just overwhelmed and/or fearful, you need to know that there is help available. Take a big deep breath. Your doctor is not going to have enough time for a complete orientation to answer every question you have. But there is someone knowledgeable who does. nmss logoWe suggest you first start with the National MS Society's MSFriends® One-on-One Connections. If you live in the Central Coast, there is also someone local who can be your mentor. Please contact us for additional help.
